Bart McDermott Joins SDSC as Director for External Relations and Partnership Collaborations

SAN DIEGO - April 29, 2002 - As part of ongoing efforts to expand its external relations and partnership collaborations, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, has announced that Bart McDermott has joined the center as program director for External Relations.

A world leader in developing and applying technology to advance science, SDSC has active collaborations with more than 50 private sector partners in the San Diego area and across the country. McDermott will work closely with current and prospective partners to leverage SDSC's expertise in biosciences, data and knowledge systems, and high-end computing and communications.

"Bart brings with him valuable experience in partnership development at a major government laboratory and at firms in Silicon Valley," said Fran Berman, SDSC director. "SDSC research, technologies, and expertise are already benefiting dozens of firms, and we are looking forward to Bart expanding the impact that SDSC has on the local, state, and national economy."

McDermott comes to SDSC with experience in partnership development and technology licensing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). At LLNL, he managed technology transfer activities for the Biology and Biotechnology, Energy, Engineering, and Environmental Directorates, identified commercialization potential of technology, and developed marketing plans to seek partners and funding.

More recently, McDermott worked with Oracle Corporation as the director of business development for their Oracle Small Business Suite. He also has experience in business development with two Silicon Valley Internet startups and in strategic partnerships involving U.S. small businesses. "SDSC's world-leading research staff and technologies are a major resource for enhancing the competitiveness of firms in biosciences, wireless communications, and data management," McDermott said. "I'm excited to be able to help SDSC strengthen its existing partnerships and forge new collaborations in San Diego, throughout California, and around the country."

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is an organized research unit of UCSD and the leading-edge site of the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI).
